I’ve recently decided to start encoding my CD collection to mp3 and decided to do some research. Here’s a few links that I found useful in deciding what bitrate to use, also VBR versus CBR (Constant Bitrate Versus Variable Bitrate) quality versus file size, important decisions like that 😉
The software I’m going to be using is called grip (The frontend) and lame (The mp3 decoder) and the OS is the Ubuntu Feisty. I’m making the assumption that you already have lame and grip installed, if not read the link below which includes instructions on how to install lame and grip.
How to convert audio CD’s and understanding what you are doing
Below is an interesting article that tells you about the various lame command line switches an how to get the most out of them.
How to encode top quality audio files using Windows, Lame, Ogg Vorbis
Below are my grip setting:
As you might notice from the snapshot of the config-encode-encoder section of grip I’m using the lame command -V2 –vbr-new -q0 –lowpass 19.7. If you want to know why then feel free to read the article above entitled “How to encode top quality audio files using Windows, Lame, Ogg Vorbis”
Occasionally Grip doesn’t managed to find the correct IDv3 tags for the ripped songs, when that happens I use Easytag, to install it on Ubuntu Feisty simply type:
sudo apt-get install easytag
at the command prompt
I would definately recommend it, It’s saved me loads of time.
Went to Club Noir last night at Studio 24.
Very very intersting 🙂 the show was pretty damn good and I really enjoyed it. The only downside was the stink eminating from the guys toilets, (do the folk at Studio 24 ever clean them? Minging is all I can say).
I’ve just won 10 tickets to Forth One’s Payday Friday at the City Nightclub on Friday August 31st. Excellent! Might have to take a half day or leave work early to enjoy it.
Just finished “The Pitreavie AAC Forth Bridge 10K“, this is the second time I’ve competed in this race, it was hard work but well worth the effort. Going by my running watch I did it in approximately 42 minute, I’ll know more when the results come out this week. Heres few photos below:
||Name and (Number)
||Chris Dawson (79)
||Billy Dickson (78) (Me!)
||Mark Dawson (16)
We did quite well considering there were 307 runners on the day, quite a few of them in clubs (apart from us unattached fellows).
The full provisional results can be downloaded from this page. More race info:
Only 3 weeks until the FreshnLow Glasgow Half Marathon, my first half marathon having only run full marathons before. Got to say, I’m really quite looking forward to it, so far the training is going pretty damn good 🙂
I’ve got the Pitreavie AAC 10K run this weekend hopefully, I’m saying hopefully because I’m getting a little concerned. My name has been accepted but I’ve still not got my running number (myself and a few friends). Lets hope I get it in the next few days 😐
