Howto – Backup your files automatically to a second hard disk in Linux

This “Howto” only really applies to a single workstation and is a quick and easy solution to backing up your own files, if you were backing up a server with numerous users, you would of course backup to another machine preferably at another physical location on the network.

Penicuik to West Linton 20 mile run

Today I ran from Penicuik to the “Broken Tree” just outside West Linton Whoooooooh! scary!, anyway, weather was fine, a bit cold but not too bad. My legs were a bit heavy but I didn’t feel tired at all after the run. I’ll see how I feel tomorrow, after all it usually a day or two after a long run that the tiredness kicks in. About 7 weeks to go until the Paris Marathon and I’m looking forward to it.

Upgraded wordpress plugins

Spent a bit of time today upgrading my WordPress plugins

 1. I’ve upgraded Google XML from 3.0.2 to 3.0.3
 2. I’ve upgraded NextGen Gallery from 0.74 to 0.82

I did have a problem with the sideshow part of NextGen, but a quick scan about told me that I was missing the file “imagerotator.swf” from my installation directory. All I had to do was download JW Image Rotator, extract the file “imagerotator.swf” and copy it to my nextgen-gallery plugin directory.
cp imagerotator.swf ~/public_html/wp-content/plugins/nextgen-gallery/
Everything seems to have upgraded without a problem 🙂

Long run this week in the Sun!

My first sunny run this year, fantastic. The course this week was flat and since there was no wind to speak of, I managed to run at a reasonable pace, hence the decent time. Totally different from last weeks snow running, but I’ve got to say I enjoyed both runs for totally different reason, “variety is the spice of life” and all that.

Updated wordpress using subversion

Ohh the joys of subversion, I’ve just updated my wordpress blog from version 2.3.2 to version 2.3.3 to address a security issue. I’m really glad I converted my wordpress installation last month to use subversion.

All I had to do was ssh into my account and type:
svn sw http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress/tags/2.3.3/
It then updated the following files:
U wp-includes/gettext.php
U wp-includes/version.php
U wp-includes/pluggable.php
U xmlrpc.php
U wp-admin/install-helper.php
Updated to revision 6736.
Job done, lunch time for me 🙂

CCcold 20 mile training run

Today was quite an interesting run, started of in Penicuik, ran along the road to West Linton and back again. Then around Penicuik by running along Carlops Road, up towards A702, down Belwood Road and Mauricewood Road and along Edinburgh road, a grand total of 20 miles. Unfortunately Google maps seems to miss out the last part of the 20 miles for some reason, not sure why, hence the commentary.

I’ve not ran any distance on snow before so it was a learning experience, what I did notice was that because it was snow, I was wasting a lot of effort, my feet were continually slipping. From mile 6 to 8 the wind picked up and the snow was practically horizontal, making visibility almost impossible (should have worn snow goggles). The running pace wasn’t good but considering the conditions, I’m more than happy with it.
